An African Welcome at Fancourt

Former heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders walked straight up to Gary Player and with a “Hello, Uncle Gary” gave him a big hug, which teed off the official welcome function for the Gary Player Invitational, presented by Coca-Cola, at Fancourt on Thursday.

Golfers, celebrities, sports stars and businessmen mingled together during an African-themed evening in which the Grand Slam champion welcomed them with the words, “You are all making a difference to one child’s life. As adults we may be able to accept adversity, but a child needs our protection”.

Overheard during the dinner:

Retief Goosen: “It’s so good to be back here. I’m looking forward to the week. We all know that it’s about charity here. But once we tee it up on Saturday and when the real thing starts, you can bet I want to win.”

Corrie Sanders: “It’s great to meet some of the big golfers here. It’s a special week and it’s an honour to come and play here. Gary is a huge icon worldwide. He’s a big guy in sport worldwide. It’s fantastic to meet him. He’s so down to earth and it’s a great honour to be here. I’m not playing too much golf myself these days. But I can still handle myself.”

DJ Spoony: “I’m really looking forward to playing The Links. Any course that’s good enough for Gary Player is good enough for me. I watch every bit of golf and I know this course is a tough test. Hopefully we won’t be off the back tees, but I’m used to playing in some tough conditions. It’s an honour to be invited to play. Gary is a living legend, and there aren’t too many of them. So when Gary comes knocking I come running.”

Sally Little: “I’ve been privileged. This is my third year of playing in this event. I don’t think people realise how much Gary has raised for charity. I’m mind-boggled with what this event is all about. It’s a feel-good thing and it’s amazing how the game of golf can make the world a better place. South Africans give a lot and I like the spirit of my country. Gary tested himself against the best, and against all odds. These people come into your life through sport and they put you at another level as well. Gary did that, and it inspires the youth.”

Maria Verchenova: “I’ve read about Gary Player a lot and I met him for the first time this week. He’s such a nice guy and so kind. He had a tough life and he became such a great golfer, but is still a nice man as well. I’m really proud of him.”
