Sunshine Tour Winner Tees It Up With Legends In Gary Player Invitational
Sunshine Tour professional Garth Mulroy remembers watching old TV footage of Gary Player taking on Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. This weekend, Mulroy will see the Grand Slam champion in action live after the young star qualified to play in the Gary Player Invitational, presented by Coca-Cola, at The Links at Fancourt.
Mulroy’s seven-stroke victory in the Coca-Cola Championship, hosted by Gary Player, at Fancourt on Thursday secured him a place in the prestigious Gary Player Invitational, which will be played over 36 holes at The Links this weekend.
“It’s definitely an honour to play in Mr Player’s event,” said Mulroy. “It’s an event for a good cause and raises a lot of money for charity, so it should be very enjoyable.”
Mulroy realised one of his boyhood dreams when he met Player personally for the first time this week.
“I got into golf kind of late. But I live in the United States now and watch the old footage on The Golf Channel of Mr Player playing with Nicklaus and Palmer and those guys. I had the privilege of meeting him for the first time this week, and just talking to him and the way he conducted himself made me think about things that I need to start doing.”
Mulroy has won twice in South Africa this year since returning to the Sunshine Tour from the Nationwide Tour. This latest victory has also secured him a place in December’s Alfred Dunhill Championship and South African Open, two tournaments he was previously not exempt for.
But first up on his agenda is a meeting with arguably the most challenging golf course in South Africa, The Links, which was designed by the Black Knight himself and which Player still rates as the best golf course in the country.
“I’ve never played The Links before. I saw a lot of it during The Presidents Cup and it certainly looked interesting. It looked pretty tough,” he said.
Mulroy finds himself in illustrious company in this tournament. The field includes double US Open champion Retief Goosen, Italian Costantino Rocca, former European Tour legend Rodger Davis, John Bland, Vincent Tshabalala and former LPGA Tour star Sally Little.
And amongst the celebrities, sports stars Victor Matfield, Shaun Pollock, Lucas Radebe, Corrie Sanders, Roland Schoeman and Kenny Dalglish round off an impressive field.
