Player Profiles: Bertus Smit
A successful wheat farmer for thirty years in the Western Cape and a provincial golfer for 27 years, Bertus Smit enjoyed a celebrated amateur career during which he won 110 national open championships before turning professional in 2002. He featured prominently on mini tours in America, finishing top of the Sunbelt Senior Professional Golf Tour Money List in 2002 and 2003. In 2005, Smit finished second at the European Senior Tour Qualifying School and enjoyed eight top-10 finishes in 16 starts his rookie year in 2006. In 2008, he tied for second at the Jersey Seniors Classic but narrowly missed the top-50 on the Order of Merit. A return trip to Q-School and a second place finish secured his playing privileges for 2009, a season in which he won his maiden Senior Tour event, the Ryder Cup Wales Senior Open at Royal Porthcawl.
