Roger Wessels was born in Port Elizabeth and turned professional at a relatively late age in 1987. While Wessels didn’t excel as an amateur, he was considered one of South Africa’s most respected golf professionals.

Wessels won several tournaments on the Sunshine Tour, including the South African PGA in 1991 in play-off with Mark James and American Hugh Royer. His other victories included the 1992 Tzaneen Classic, the Kalahari Classic and Mercedez Benz Golf Challenge in 1994, the 1995 Phalaborwa Mafunuane Trophy and Renwick Group Classic Pro-Am in 1995, the Phalaborwa Mafunuane Trophy in 1996, the Observatory Classic in 2000 and the Platinum Classic in 2001.  In 1994, he won the Canadian Masters and the same year represented South Africa at the World Cup in Puerto Rico. His last victory came at the 1999 Smurfit COC Pro-Am.

Wessels played on the European Tour from 1995 to 2003, having his best season in 2000 when he finished 35th on the European Tour Order of Merit.  After 20 years on the professional circuit for 20 years, Wessels retired and pursued a career as a teaching professional.

He completed a Diploma linked to Birmingham University and on completion of his three year course, he took the position as Head Professional at Killarney Country Club in Johannesburg, where he remained for three years.

In 2006 he relocated to George in the Southern Cape where he assisted with establishment of the KeNako Academy at Fancourt and took up the position of Director of Golf. As the academy’s head coach, Wessels has integrated human movement science and the golf swing; his coaching combines his intellectual knowledge together with his practical experience, providing a unique, vibrant and stimulating coaching experience.

Wessels has also completed other international coaching courses and several other management courses and is a member of the PGA of South Africa and the British PGA.

Having passed the 50 year mark, Wessels is considering trying out for the European Senior Tour.
